What's your gun bargain?
Date: 2022-May-26           Author: Barry Shatzman
It's time to stop coming up with witty arguments about guns and mass shootings. It's time to be dead serious.
Which parents said goodbye to their children one day in 2012 and found themselves waiting at a firehouse to learn if they'll ever see them again?
There's a list below (sorry i've yet to confirm them all but you'll recognize names) of schools where students had their lives ended by guns. Let me repeat that. Their lives. Ended. And that doesn't include supermarkets, places of worship and entertainment, workplaces, or anywhere you expect yourself or a family member to come home from.
If you're a young parent, take a look at that list and tell me any reason you think you won't be at a firehouse one day. Or this afternoon.
Or are you one of those who mocked the victims and their families by saying they were crisis actors? How brainwashed do you need to be to think even for a microsecond that there's even a molecule of reasonableness to that? Please tell me you're not really that dumb.
Or did you say there's nothing we should do because the Constitution's second amendment... which argues for well-regulated militias... allows anyone to have any quantity of any type of gun without passing a meaningful background check, telling anyone they have it, or even telling anyone if it gets stolen?
Or maybe you think the solution is to have everyone... teachers, clergy, and airline pilots... carry guns... because what saves more lives than bullets flying randomly in every direction?
Or maybe it's all a mental health problem. Well duh. As if anyone over 6 playing commando and gunning down random people is sane. But being mentally ill doesn't give them the superpower to point their finger and have death rays shoot out. So riddle me this. Why do you want them to have guns but you won't provide them with mental health care?
Sandy Hook was far from the first school shooting, But why the hell wasn't it the last? For that matter, why wasn't Columbine? This is not rhetorical. It's as binary as it gets. You either value unfettered access to guns, or you value your children. How much more evidence do you need that those are mutually exclusive?
So here's what it all comes down to. How much are you willing to let your child be shot? What's your bargain?
Do you really want to end the epidemic of mass shootings? Write to your representative and senators! Enough consituents writing can beat gun lobbyists.
