Transportation Department asks for clearer fee disclosure

In May, 2014 the Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would require most airlines and travel websites to clearly disclose fees for commonly used services such as checking bags.

The proposed regulation also would require airlines to more clearly disclose any code sharing agreements that affect what airline you actually would fly on.

Bill would allow airlines to advertise base ticket price only

In March, 2014 Rep. Bill Shuster introduced the Transparent Airfares Act. The bill would allow airlines to advertise the ticket price, rather than the full price a traveler would pay (airfare plus government taxes and fees).

This bill passed the House of Representatives, but was not acted on by the Senate. It expired at the end of the 113th Congress.
