Bill establishes who the Secret Service protects

This bill authorizes the Secret Service to protect:

o The U.S. president and vice president
o Members of the president's and vice president's immediate families
o Officers next in the order of succession to the president
o The president-elect and vice president-elect
o Visiting heads of foreign states or governments

The president may direct the Secret Service to protect:

o Major presidential and vice presidential candidates
o A former president and his wife during his lifetime
o The widow of a former president until she remarries or dies
o Children of a former president younger than 16 years old
o Other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States
o Official U.S. representatives preforming special missions abroad

Each person protected is allowed to designate one personal property for the Secret Service also to protect. The Secret Service may protect other properties, but at a limited cost.

Accountability provisions

This law requires the Secret Service, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Coast Guard to report to Congress twice a year on how much it spent providing protection.

It also allows for audits of expenditures by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
