Bill would revise preclearance criteria

This bill was written to address the Supreme Court's 2014 Shelby County v. Holder decision.

In that decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the preclearance provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act could not be enforced because the criteria to determine which jurisdictions were likely to violate voting rights were outdated.

This bill establishes new criteria.

Did not receive a vote in the Senate

This bill expired when the 116th Congress ended in Jan. 2021.
