CATEGORIES: More Trouble, Group (Last Day Trump 2021)In 2016, Adriana Shayota was convicted for manufacturing and selling millions of counterfeit versions of the energy drink 5-Hour Energy.
The counterfeit products were made in unsanitary conditions by untrained day workers using unregulated ingredients.
While no deaths were directly attributed to the counterfeit products, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigated several deaths involving energy drinks during the same time period.
She was sentenced to just over 2 years in prison. When Trump granted her clemency she had served approximately half of that sentence.
Among those who wrote letters in support of Shayota were a former San Diego police captain who later would plead guilty to illegal gun sales and John McCann - a Chula Vista City Council member who said he was asked to write by Andres Camberos - Shayota's brother.
Camberos later would contribute to McCann's 2022 successful mayoral campaign.
