See what a Universal Health Care law might look like

Though we have covered the major ways of how a single-payer health care system would affect you, you can get a deeper understanding by reading the American Health Security Act, which was introduced in the 1134th Senate and would have created such a system in the United States.

Universal Health Care is not new

Universal Health Care is not a new concept. In fact, every major country except the United States has some form of it.

The American Health Security Act was introduced in two separate sessions of Congress. It was not allowed to be brought to a vote either time.

Several U.S. states have considered Universal Health Care plans. The California legislature passed a Universal Health Care law twice - in 2007 and 2008. Then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill each time.

How does health care work in other countries?

As we have mentioned, the United States spends more on health care per person than any other country, yet the U.S. is the only industrialized country that does not guarantee health care to every one of its citizens.

How do these countries fare? The links in this section will highlight how health care works in some other countries...

o This Washington Post report explains how Canada's health system works. It also discusses how well (or not so well) it works - from costs to wait times to outcomes.

o This New York Times report compares the U.S. health system to Sweden's.

For a direct comparison between the U.S. and several countries, read this 2014 Commonwealth Fund report.
